The perils of international aviation - from JFK

This clip is of exchanges with the JFK tower AFTER Air China, flight 981 had landed, and revolved around taxiing the jet to its assigned ramp. There are problems with language. Apparently inflection for "interrogatives" is handled a bit differently in Chinese?

It's hilarious, but raises the question: How in the name of bejeezuss did this flight avoid calamity while landing?
